Non communicable Diseases (NCD) are on the rise in Sri Lanka. Heart diseases, Diabetes and high cholesterol are major health problems in our society. Contributory dietary factors are, high intake of Sugar, Salt and Fat among others.
Hence Ministry of Health has introduced a new regulation under the food Act called “colour coding for sugar salt and fat”. According to this new regulation it is mandatory to label all solid and semi-solid foods from 1st of September as shown below.

Foods high in Sugar, salt or fat – Red logo
Foods with medium Sugar, salt or fat – Amber logo
Foods low in Sugar, salt or fat –Green logo

This will help the patients or those who are concerned in NCDs to minimize their intake of sugar salt and fat in their diets. Please check the foods on the shelf before you choose sometimes the taste is misleading!
